30/9/17 We Start on the world famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie on this Last day of the 2017 Salmon Season, there were two Salmon caught, so I was informed, so on that note we head upstream to Lough Currane and World Wide Web of www.fishingwithdom.com and we will let renowned Gillie Mr.Dominic McGillicuddy and of www.fishingwithdom.com have the last say on today’s proceedings, on this last day of the Salmon season on Lough Currane UK angler, Mr. Phil Staniforth, caught released 8 lbs. Salmon, caught on the troll, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and of  www.fishingwithdom.com Now for Dominic’s quote of the day ! Caught the first Salmon on the Lake in 2017 and caught the last Salmon on the Lake for 2017 all I can say is Mr. Phil Staniforth may beg to differ. 29/9/17 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong W wind blowing down the Lake, this didn’t deter a few boats fighting the elements, sadly they failed miserably in their duties in all departments. Wind as already stated with heavy showers. 28/9/17 Again the Weather and Lough Currane were on a yellow status alert today   and all My Noble Anglers could do was admire the waves hitting the North Shore and come lunch time the heavens opened and all hell broke loose with the rain pouring down and a strong gale from the SE and veered SW this evening. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall, 28.6 mm. Maximum air temperature 16.3c.

Lough Currane this evening!

27/9/17 Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front in all departments and you can say without any fear of contradiction the World Wide Web Anglers failed miserably in their duties in all departments. Wind W light, with reasonable cloud cover.  In defence of my Noble Web anglers, there was a great flood last night, just for the record there was 15.6mm rainfall and the total amount so far this month is 156.4mm. Yesterdays weather, rainfall as already stated, maximum air temperature 17.6c.

25/9/17 All the Lough Currane C&R headlines come from the World wide web of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for good reason, UK anglers caught 3 Salmon while trolling with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of  www.oshealoughcurrane.com their biggest weighed in at 13 lbs the other two Salmon weighed in at 4 ½ and 6 lbs. I can tell you there were a few envious anglers as they watched Local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea release all three back into the Currane system. Wind South light with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 16.8c.

On Calm side

 24/9/17 We Start in the back date department there was a fine 7 ½ lbs Salmon caught the other day by Luxembourg Angler Ernie, while Fishing on the World Famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie  and staying on the Butler Pool, there was another fine Grilse caught today. Now we head upstream to the great Lough Currane where there was some good action in the Salmon department, so as we head down North shore to the Bugalow, Luxembourg Angler, Mr. Amlung Bob and fishing out of  www.lakelandshouse.com caught and released a fine 6 ½ lbs Salmon, while trolling with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and at www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com We stay on the North shore and the  home of Salmon fishing the Bungalow, a Guest while trolling with his Gillie Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught and released a fine 4 ½ lbs. Grilse and finished their day off with C&R 1 ½ lbs. Sea Trout. Just for the record there were 10 boats out this day. Wind West light to calm with bright sunshine. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 8.0mm. Maxinum air temperature 16.1.

23/9/17 Lough Currane was at a standstill, thanks to a strong to storm force Southerly wind blowing across the Lake, you could say it was batten down the hatches me hearties! Wind as already stated. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 13.2 mm. Maximum air temperature 16c.

22/9/17 There was approximately 12 boats manipulating on the Waters of Lough Currane today and all the headlines come from the south side and hired out boat department of http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/anglersrest.html and for good reason, UK angler Mr. Chris Mills, caught and released a cracker of a 10 ½ lbs. specimen Sea Trout, caught on the fly and by all accounts Chris had one hell of a Gillie 90 years young, UK Angler Mr. Jim Woodhead, who I might add has been fishing Waterville Lake for 40 years. Just for the record I believe it’s the biggest Sea Trout that Chris has ever caught and the biggest that Jim has ever netted, what a combination and not forgetting the silver Invicta trout fly! Wind North in the morning and veered West in the afternoon with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.2mm. Maximum air temperature 15.3c.

21/9/17 All anglers failed miserably in their duties in all departments this day on Lough Currane. What can one say except a few lessons in the presentation department wouldn’t do any harm! Wind SW light to fresh with bright sunshine all day, at least my Noble Anglers caught a suntan! Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 13. 2 mm. Maximum air temperature 15.5c.

20/9/17 Straight to the C&R department, a Guest fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of  www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught and released a fine 4 ½ lbs. Salmon on the troll. I believe that was the only boat out fishing and it just proves one thing if your out there My Noble Gentlemen the Salmon can be caught. Wind NE light and overcast with heavy down pours. Lough Currane

19/9/17 We start in the C&R backdate department, just for the record in the past week, a couple of anglers caught 3 Salmon and 9 Sea Trout to their rods. Now today’s action, there were just a few boats out this day manipulating the waters of Lough Currane and by all accounts they all failed miserably in their duties and with a nice breeze from the south they have no excuse, either their fly or lure selection has a lot to be desired or their fishing the wrong fly line or their lure at the wrong depth. Wind as already stated and overcast with heavy this morning. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 16.0c.

18/9/17 Lough Currane was all quiet on SW front. Wind, calm this morning and a light breeze from the W light this afternoon. Now to the comments department from the C&R angler and I quote, As any good angler knows that the older and bigger Sea Trout produce less eggs. I don’t see anything wrong with killing one. They have there job done. Its killing a junior or 1lb and half trout that’s a sin and we’re all guilty of this. As for  comments, what have all those so call experts done for Currane only take, take and give nothing back.

Belgium Anglers state their case

It is not a habit of mine joining in discussions on blogs, but as a member of the, by now, hated Belgian fishingparty that fished Currane last week, I feel I don’t have another choice. I feel that what has happened here is grately injust, to say the least, to my friends and myself. So I think we have a right to put things into perspective? At first my appologies for what will probably be not the best of English. Speaking for myself now at first, I have been flyfishing (only) in Ireland for more than thirty years by now, mostly for trout, but also for seatrout and occasionally for salmon. Fishing for at least once a year, sometimes two or even three times , my guess is that this must be close to fourty visits. During all this time I must indeed plead guilty for the massive killing, keeping and eating of 6 salmon and, I guess, 30 seatrout , all perfectly within your fishery laws. That’s not even one fish per visit, partly during a period when C&R was never heard of in Ireland! I know money should have nothing to do with flyfishing, but for the people accusing my friends and me for fishing for fish and not for fun, I will let them work out the maths for themselfs.  Maybe it’s good to know that one visit is a cost of around €1000.  So I think it’s reasonable to say the fish is of no importance to us, the fishing is. And while we’re at it, this money is spend in your economy by the way, Aer Lingus, rental cars, gasoline stations, local pubs and restaurants, self catering houses, fishing licenses and hired out boats…. And no, we are not privileged people moneywise, we are working class, of which 3 out of 4 are retired.

As for the beautifull lough Currane, it’s upper lakes, River Inny and surroundings, a place we love just as much as you do, we are flyfishing there since 1998. It has been the (disgusting from what I’ve read just recently) habit of ours of taking home one (1) good fish each, if we were lucky enough to catch one. More often than not we were not, but be sure that this did never curbed our enthousiasme for going at it very hard, that’s how people out there know us, feel free to ask around. We’ve had good years and bad one’s, and the bad one’s were not necessary those of recent years, two years ago we caught more than 70 seatrout (kept one each as usual, and yes, we know the difference from a brown trout), three years ago around 40, even when being blown of the lake half the week. So forgive us from thinking this lake is ok. On my first visit in 1998 I managed 14 seatrout, two years later I managed just 1 in very good conditions. This goes to show that for us visiting anglers this has always been a very fluctuating experience. And that’s what you see on these dreadfull pictures, three fish taken home, by four flyfishing friends experiencing a lean year on Currane, it’s as simple as that, no more, no less. The seatrout being totally ok for taking, we’ve seen much worse. The grilse less so, I admit, but for a first salmon taken in a lifetime, who are we to judge?

We always take legislation very seriously, any which country we fish, also our own. Hell, we were buying our salmon licenses in a small shop in mainstreet Waterville the first year we went there, while the whole of Waterville made fun of us for doing so!! But we did, because that’s who we are, we want to do things right, and if for some reason the taking of this one fish is no longer acceptable we will be the first to go along with this. Even without being mandatory we would go along with that, we fish Sheelin a couple of years, always C&R because the local club asks us to act that way, and someone put up some flyers with “don’t kill the goose with the golden eggs”in every mooring around the lake. We don’t take any fish, even if legally allowed, if we know something is wrong.  But it is Irish responsibility, or local anyway, to point visiting anglers in the right direction. For us Currane never had this problem, because told nowhere! Connemara has and great parts of Scotland have. A seatrout collapse in Kerry, never heard of! Surely a fishery as vast as this is monitored well, knowing exactly what comes in, and when to take action accordingly when nothing does. The River Inny  is looked after nicely the last couple of years and that’s only a few miles away. If Currane is in the state you all say it’s in, how come nobody is taking any action? But that is really not my business, it’s yours.  Did I mention that I fished the Inny as well this year? On the C&R basis, barbless single hooks and all that is required. I did not do well, but enjoyed every moment of it, despite being the fishmonger you all suggest I am.

What struck us the most, except for the language some of you use (this “wanker” boy taking the lead), is the fact that you all were very quick in judging us, being foreign I guess did us no good. Let me tell you that during our week just us, a man from France and a party from the UK were fishing the lake, there just was nobody else, only foreigners. Like you all will know probably, this lake used to employ as much as fourty ghillies a long time ago, while commercially being netted for seatrout/salmon, you surely must admit that fishing cannot be the problem.

So what happens now, I don’t know, we might come back to fish, probably not. Some of you might applaud that, getting rid of foreign fishermen. Allow me to tell you just one more thing, this has taken long enough. Next time you drive into town passing Currane River bridge, if you have the problem I think you have, it will be on your left hand (salty)side, not us on your right. And it will be foreign too, and not so easily to get rid of. But if you manage to get your act together, (until a couple of day’s ago we would have taken a flight and supported you in doing so), commercial interests on the lake, environmental ones, and even the ones shouting at us incognito,  to face and fight this problem, the iconic status of the salmon and seatrout might help you in court if the judge is a relative of Kingsmill Moore. If not, which is likely, it will certainly help you to point out the economical value of this fishery, because it’s all about that these days.  And that’s when you will wish there were more of us foreign fishermen left on the system, we add nicely to the figure. I rest my case!

16/9/17 Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front, so we will head up to the upper lakes and Lough Derriana and the C&R Department on the Lough and the Inny so I will let the angler's themselves tell the story of their trip so far on the Waterville fishery,  Hi Vincent. 15/9/17 Just a few boats stimulating on Lough Currane and it was all quiet on the SW front and with the wind in the NE that's not surprising. So
now to the complaints department, A point was made that I should stay neutral, normally I would agree but on this occasion I would beg to differ, for this reason, I won’t tolerate people who abuse tourist anglers and who I might add  haven’t broken any fisting law, these Anglers  come to the Waterville Fishery to fish and not to be abused on the net after their Fishing Trip to Waterville, point of order if you don’t mind me saying so, what condition were these Fish in after a good battle? Were you in the boat with these anglers? Answer is No!

14/9/17 There were just a few boats out this day on Lough Currane and yes you have it, they failed miserably in their duties in all departments and  a few lessons from tourist anglers wouldn’t do any harm and why do I say this? Well it stems from all the negative comments made today and I smell a touch of jealousy, obviously these great Anglers have caught more in a few days than you anglers have caught all season? And as the C&R angler says they don’t come into graze. Now for today’s weather, wind, going by the internet today it was coming from all directions but mainly NW with good cloud cover and the odd shower. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 7.0mm. 13/9/17 There were just one or two boats out manipulating the Waters of Lough Currane and going by my phone I’m sad to say they failed miserably in their Duties in all departments. On that note, we will head for the comments department and even though I say it myself the Hampshire professionals put it perfectly and I must admit its worth reading. Now to the Backdate department and the full facts and photos of the Belgium anglers trip to the Waterville Fishery so I will let Marc tell you all their facts. We’ve had a very challenging week on Currane, not at least for the very bad weather, fishing from September 5th to September 11th. One Salmon on the Butler Pool, two good Sea Trout ranging from  4 ½ lbs. up to 6 lbs. on Lough Currane, plus we also caught 12 juniors which we returned and a number of brownies also returned. 12/9/17 Lough Currane was at a standstill by lunchtime,  what boats were out there called it a day and for good reason, there was a strong and wild SW wind blowing and come this evening it was storm force with www.met.ie  issuing a yellow warning and that sums up today’s action and I can say without any fear of contradiction my Noble anglers were completely exonerated  from failing in their duties in all departments. Wind as already stated and just for the record it made a fair bit of rain this afternoon. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 4.6 mm. Maximum air temperature  15.5c.

We start with the Hampshire professionals and for good reason, Mr, Nigel Henshaw caught a fine Grilse on the fly and his fellow professional fly angler Mr. Peter Ruffle, finished their day off with another fine Grilse and just for the record their weights  were 4 and 5 lbs. respectively, Staying with Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of  Waterville Boats and at  watervilleboats@gmail.com Belgium anglers caught a fine 6 lbs plus Sea Trout on the fly, I will give you all the facts on the Belgium fishing Trip in tomorrow’s notes. Just for the record they make this annual trip to Waterville every year as do the Hampshire professionals. 10/9/17 A few boats ventured out first thing this morning, but come lunch time they called it a day, but as I say that one boat did dog it out for the day and drew a blank, but this didn’t stop the Hampshire Professionals from recording their Grand Slam, and that accolade goes to Hampshire Professional, Mr, Nigel Henshaw, and he did it in style with a cracker of a 9 lbs, Salmon caught on the fly, down stream on the World Famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie  and I tell you there is one hell of a party in the back of the Lobster Bar and in the words of the Hampshire Professionals and I qoute , we ain’t finished yet. 9/9/17 The Hampshire Professionals and Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com take all the Game Fishing headlines, Mr. Trevor Dewberry, Mr, Nigel Henshaw and Mr. Peter Ruffle, caught  2 grilse ranging from 4lbs up to 5lbs, with six brownies, and 3 juniors to 1½ lbs. Just for the record, juniors and browns were all returned. Now you can say these anglers didn’t fail miserably in their duties, lets hope they can make it a Grand slam tommrow, but going by the forecast it isn’t looking good with www.met.ie  putting Kerry on a yellow warning and forecasting W to NW winds gusting up to 110 Km/h and if this is the case, the high stool will be the first port of call for my Noble Anglers. 8/9/17 All the C&R Sea Trout and Brown Trout fly headlines come from Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com So straight to the anglers from Belgium fishing in a hired out from Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com caught a cracker of a Sea Trout in the 4 lbs. plus class, staying at Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com  The Hampshire Professionals, Mr. Trevor Dewberry, Mr, Nigel Henshaw and Mr. Peter Ruffle, were in good form with 4 Sea Trout from junior class up to  2 ¼ lbs and six Brown Trout. 7/9/17 There were six boats manipulating on the Lough Currane waters this day and sadly their performance has a lot to be desired and its about time we anglers pulled our flies up and got our act together! On those words of wisdom, we will head for the comments department on the 6/9/17 a comment was made why wasn’t photos taken of the fish caught, well here is your answer from the C&R Angler. As any good angler knows Paul, the more time Sea Trout are out of the water less chance of survival, so they went straight back, I had no time for a photo, its easy take photos when you kill them. Vincent I cant under why you are getting so much stick on your Blog, your job is to report catches, not manage a fishery, your work is top class, photos brilliant and you tell the truth every day. 17.3 6/9/17 There were a few boats out manipulating in all departments this day and going by my telephonic communications, the Wild Lough Currane Game Fish pulled another one over the anglers as they came home empty handed and red faced and sadly could only talk about the one that got away! Lough Currane!

3/9/17 The big flood takes all the headlines and with 39.8 mm rainfall in 14 hours that’s not surprising. In the wild fish department, it was all quiet on the SW front and with little to no wind, so you can say my Noble flie angler is exonerated for any misdemeanors and as you can see by the professorial photo, Lough Currane was on the calm side, plus there was fog on the Lake at times. Yesterdays weather amount of rainfall as already stated. Maximum air temperature 17c.

Where Eagles Dare!

2/9/17 Lough Currane was all quiet on all fronts and for good reason, http://www.met.ie/forecasts/ put Kerry on an orange alert with 40 mm plus of rainfall with a Strong SSE forecasted, just for the record the heavy rain started about 11 am and is still falling 10 hours later. We will exonerate all the Waterville anglers this day as the weather took control of today’s procedures, just for the record there were six boats out manipulating and if a Wild Atlantic Salmon or wild Lough Currane specimen Sea Trout were caught the angler or anglers in question would have failed miserably in their duties for not letting their fingers do the talking.
